Wood & clean lines

Architecture at the Hotel Krone

The architecture of our hotel is characterised by clean lines and warm wooden aesthetics. Our innovative, sustainable design reflects our connection to the region, creating an atmosphere that combines tradition and modernity in harmony.

Before 2000

The beginnings of a transformation (from 1998)

In collaboration with the architectural firm Oskar Leo Kaufmann & Albert Rüf, the comprehensive redesign of the Hotel Krone began in the fall of 1998. The oldest part of the building, dating from 1904, was partially demolished and, within just five days, a new wing with 18 prefabricated wooden boxes on two floors and an attic was erected. Despite these extensive measures, winter operations were able to commence on schedule.

2000-2007

The transformation continued

  • In 2002, the section of the building facing the church was renovated within eight weeks. Seven new rooms were created in the attic and existing rooms were enlarged.
  • In 2005, a natural swimming lake measuring approximately 300 m² and reaching depths of up to 3.5 m was created alongside gardens to enhance the summer offering. At the same time, the third wing of rooms was modernised.
  • Another highlight came in 2007 with the construction of the SkySPA on the fourth and fifth floors. Its unique location offers wonderful views of the Kanisfluh and features transparent architecture with light wood.

2008-2016

Tradition meets Modernism

  • In 2009, the public areas — the reception, entrance, fireplace lounge, bar and restaurant — were completely redesigned to match the building’s linear, transparent style. This created space for a library and a modern restaurant area.
  • In 2016, the rooms dating from 1998 were fitted with wooden floors and new upholstered furniture.

These comprehensive construction phases transformed the traditional hotel into a modern, forward-looking establishment. The consistent use of local craftsmen and materials, especially wood from Au and the surrounding region, highlights the hotel’s dedication to local building practices. The Krone’s architecture exudes lightness and transparency, characterised by large panoramic windows and bright shapes.

Innovation for the next generation

Recent years have also seen further investment in the future:

  • In 2023, another 26 rooms in the part of the building facing the church were extensively renovated. All rooms were fitted with parquet flooring, comfortable sofas, new lighting, and new balcony furniture.

Renovation in 2025

A sustainable investment in the future

The largest renovation to date took place in 2025. In collaboration with the Dworzak-Grabher architecture studio in Lustenau, the garden house underwent a complete renovation and was expanded to include four new rooms, all within a construction period of just 200 days. The ground floor was transformed to include a new garden spa with an outdoor sauna and the Krone GYM. A new house with 21 rooms and a large common room for our employees was also built. The kitchen was completely rebuilt, and the laundry and storage rooms were modernised. Photovoltaic systems were also installed on the roofs.

“Timeless design and comfort. Appropriate architecture and a responsible use of resources. A living tradition, far removed from Alpine clichés. These are the values that the Hotel Krone and the Lingg family uphold. These were our goals during the planning stage, which we achieved by incorporating lots of wood and Bregenzerwald craftsmanship.”
